Right to Solar

The Energy Democracy Alliance is working to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to solar power, regardless of their race, income or neighborhood.

Right now, local solar power is facing serious challenges in New York State. Private utilities have lobbied for and won policies that are hurting community efforts to build shared solar projects. Meanwhile, lack of public funding for community-driven renewable energy is compounding the inequities of our energy system and starving our communities of the resources we need to chart our own energy future.

We are calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to immediately fix the Public Service Commission’s Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) policy because it is blocking the development of community solar.  Additionally, it is critical to adjust the plans for the $5 billion Clean Energy Fund to ensure that working class people and people of color are not shut out of the benefits of renewable energy. Instead, public dollars must be equitably distributed so that everyone can realize ownership and democratic control over renewable energy opportunities.
