Utility Debt Cancellation
Across New York, the COVID-19 pandemic left people without income and without any means to pay their bills. The average New Yorker who is behind on utility payments was over $1,000 in energy debt. This debt is slowing our recovery and putting the most vulnerable New Yorkers at risk of power shutoffs when the utility shut off moratorium is lifted. This is why the Energy Democracy Alliance fighting for full debt forgiveness. During an emergency, it must be the shareholders, not everyday people, who pay for energy relief.
Public Power
We know that we will never really have an equitable, accountable, renewable energy system unless we fundamentally change the ownership structure of the electric system and make electricity a public good. This is why the Energy Democracy Alliance is also fighting for public power.
Right to Solar
Right now, local solar power is facing serious challenges in New York State. Private utilities have lobbied for and won policies that are hurting community efforts to build shared solar projects. Meanwhile, lack of public funding for community-driven renewable energy is compounding the inequities of our energy system and starving our communities of the resources we need to chart our own energy future.
Peoples Public Service Commission
New York’s Public Service Commission (PSC) wields an incredible amount of power over New York’s energy system, from deciding rates to regulating distributed renewable resources. Unfortunately, the PSC is an unelected body, appointed by the Governor and not accountable in any way to the people it proposes to serve.
REV Resources
Since 2014, New York State has been promising to level the playing field for renewable energy access for all New Yorkers via the REV (Reforming the Energy Vision) process, a series of policy changes to how we produce, regulate and distribute energy. Lets call for a more accountable Public Service Commission, and building a solid network of allies for stronger net metering policies in New York State.
